Dornoch Castle

The impressive Dornoch Castle stands in the centre of Dornoch village, opposite the 12th century cathedral and is set within beautiful private gardens. The castle is steeped in fascinating tales of ruin and restoration throughout its history. The older parts of the castle were built during the 15th century but it is suspected that a Bishop's palace stood on these grounds previously. In 1922 the castle was bought privately and the new owner had the castle exorcised as it was thought to be haunted by an unhappy sheep stealer who was once imprisoned in the dungeons. Since the exorcism there have been no more apparitions.

The bedrooms are comfortable and those set within the old part of the castle have a baronial feel. In 2006 Dornoch Castle was awarded the Scottish Hotels of the Year Bedroom Design Gold Medal Award for their deluxe room, 'The Old Courtroom'. The majority of rooms have lovely views over the formal walled gardens and the Dornoch Firth.

There is a choice of dining from the candlelit Chancery Restaurant or enjoying a more relaxed meal in front of the 11-foot fireplace, in what was once the old bishop's kitchen.
