15
miles east of Edinburgh the Honourable Company of Edinburgh
Golfers reside. Being intensely private it makes perfect sense
to not advertise their club, therefore you will not find Muirfield
on any map and no signposts pointing the way!
This
is perhaps the most exclusive golf club in the British Isles
but once you have your tee time secured you are treated to one
of the fairest and most brutally honest tests of championship
links. Being an active links on the Open circuit its conditioning
is always exemplary.
The
course does not have the typical mountainous dunes and relies
more on punishing rough and bunkers for protection. Jack Nicklaus
describes the course defences as “the most fastidiously
built bunkers I have ever seen, the high front walls faced with
bricks of turf”. Simply put, if you get into trouble here
there is o guarantee you will get out easily.
Tiger
Woods stated at the 2002 Open “Muirfield is one of the
fairest Open courses. There are no hidden agendas, no tricks”.
Nick
Faldo states “In terms of shot values, variety, intricacy
and overall strength of the test, Muirfield is out there on
its own”.
