Fota
Island Golf Club as it is now was brought to life in September
of 1993 but there is evidence that golf had been played on the
estate dating as far back as 1883. The land in front of Fota
House is known as “ The Links Fields”. Fota Island
is located in the heart of a 800 acre estate which is also home
to the Fota Wildlife Park.
Water
plays a big part in this wonderful parkland golf course with
lakes, rivers and Cork Harbour just waiting for the errant shot.
Having large welcoming greens and in the case of the 8th and
14th greens, they are one double green following St. Andrews
design, giving the golfer an opportunity to score.
Its
sister property is the Mount Juliet Estate which has held the
American Express Championship where Tiger triumphed. There will
be sibling rivalry for many years to come between Mount Juliet
and Fota Island as Fota too is an ideal venue for championship
golf events as is evident from being host to two European tour
events already.
Fota has
held two Irish Open events, an Irish Amateur Open and an Irish
PGA Championship.
