Elevated
tees and plateau greens are a feature at Carne with backdrops
over Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic islands of Iniskea and dramatic
Achill. Found on Mullet Peninsula, near Belmullet, it is Europe’s
final outpost set amid the remote rugged countryside on the
far west tip of County Mayo. Eddie Hackett is noted to have
said of his last design with extreme pride “ultimately
there might be no better links golf course in the country nor
I doubt anywhere”.
The club was founded in 1925 with membership at the time costing
just over a £1-1shilling (a Guinea). Caddies were paid
at a rate of not more than 6d (pence) for nine holes. In 1992
the club moved from the nine hole links at Cross Binhgamstown
to the spectacular new 18 hole Carne Golf Links of today. “
Carne is everything you could ever ask for from the 1st tee
to the 18th green”. James W. Finnegan ( Emerald Fairways
& Foam Flecked Seas ).
Carne,
as with the majority of the links courses, can be savoured all
year round with great turf, fine large greens and mountainous
dunes. As ever the local people are only too happy for you to
try their pride and joy, they have perfected the hospitality
as only the Irish know how! If the golf game is found wanting,
you will still be guaranteed the golfing experience of a lifetime.

The
history of Donegal can be traced back 9,000
years. Still to be seen throughout the countryside are pre-Christian
tomb monuments, some form of Viking settlements, and early
Christian monuments. Some of the best weavers in the world
are located in Donegal, with this craft being passed down
for generations.
In Donegal tradition runs deeper, rhythm is stronger, and
the water is wilder than any other part in Ireland. With
so many magnificent attractions and activities to experience,
it is exhilarating and thrilling to take a holiday in this
unspoiled environment |
